Dr. Eidelson Performing Dental Cleaning

Most dental concerns are preventable. Visiting our dentist for routine dental cleanings in Philadelphia can help you keep your oral health in check and even reverse minor issues – such as gingivitis or demineralization – in their earliest stages.

Preventative dental care is typically covered at or close to 100% by most insurance plans. By scheduling in advance, you can ensure that your smile’s health is always headed in the right direction.

How Often Should I Schedule a Dental Cleaning?

People with healthy teeth and gums do best scheduling a professional dental cleaning every six months. If you have a history of gum disease or heavy tartar buildup, you may need to see us more frequently. Twice per year works best for the majority of our patients.

During your cleaning our hygienist will gently remove tartar buildup, plaque, and polish your teeth to lift away surface stains. We’ll also discuss any problem areas and adaptive hygiene methods that can help you clean them more easily each day.

Will I Need X-rays?

There are some areas of your mouth that cannot be evaluated without digital X-rays. Taking intermittent X-rays and scans of your mouth will help to screen for earlier signs of tooth decay, bone loss, or undiagnosed abscesses. Today’s digital imaging is extremely safe and uses up to 90% less radiation than X-ray equipment from a few decades ago.

Periodontal Screenings

It’s extremely important that we screen for gum disease on a regular basis (being that periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss.) Our hygienist will use a small measuring tool to assess the tissue attachment levels around each tooth. If the tissues are detaching because of disease, it will create a deep “pocket” under the gums. Depths up to 3mm are considered healthy and within the normal limits. Anything deeper is typically due to the onset of an infection and may require gum disease treatment.

Oral Cancer Screening

As your oral health provider, we spend more time looking inside of your mouth than anyone (maybe even you!) Our Philadelphia dentist is one of your best resources when it comes to screening for extremely dangerous health conditions like oral cancer. Even if you don’t smoke, drink, or get a lot of sun exposure, it’s crucial to have cancer screenings routinely. Early diagnosis is the most effective way to treat this disease, since it’s so difficult to detect on your own.

If you’re exhibiting any symptoms of oral sores that don’t heal within a couple of weeks, or tissues that look different than other areas of your mouth, let us know.

Your Exam with Top Philly Dentist, Dr. Eidelson

Dr. Eidelson will thoroughly evaluate your teeth, gums, existing dental work, oral tissues, and occlusal (biting) patterns. He’ll also screen for TMJ disorder and other atypical conditions. If he recommends any type of treatment, we’ll create an individual care plan that outlines all of the steps, procedures, and fees involved.
